Q: During tryouts, I had to cut the good friend of one of my best players. There was no way to justify keeping him on the team. Now I can sense some tension. What’s the best way to approach this?

Coach C: As a coach, you have to be truly honest. So when there’s tension because one of his friends didn’t make the team, you have to deal with it. The way you go about this is to sit down with the player who didn’t make the team and see if he has eligibility left.

The free throw. Let’s face it: No matter how many times you dissect the Xs and Os of a basketball game, sooner or later, the analysis comes down to how your team did on the charity stripe. In the end, free throws are crucial to a team’s success. These unguarded shots – taken 15 feet from the hoop – eventually separate the winners from the losers. What can drive a coach into even more of a frenzy is the fact that free throws are just that – free shots. And yet, some of the game’s best players struggle at the line (for various reasons).
