Coaching Philosophy
The ultimate basketball league

mike_eddyHow you can run a great basketball league that matters

By Mike Eddy

So, what does it take to run a great basketball league? How do you know if your kids are improving? How do you reduce the expenses to participants while at the same time keep a high level of organization and professionalism? Is there a better way of recruiting and training volunteer coaches?

The lasting impact of a coach

What's your favorite memory of a coach that impacted your life?

By Mike Eddy

I recently asked a group of friends which adults they remembered most from their childhood. Unanimously, youth coaches were among the most prominent names they listed. The most remembered were those who had either left a very positive or negative impact on their youth sporting experiences.

As a coach, you have an opportunity to make an impact on your players for a lifetime

By Neal Ring

The great Bobby Knight once said, “The game of basketball is the most over coached but under taught game in the world.” As coaches, our goal should be to not only teach our players the game of basketball but also, as On Court’s director of player development Kevin Cantwell says, “The skills of life.” We are afforded a platform as coaches to make a lasting impact in the lives of the next generation. But in order to be successful, we must take advantage of our teaching opportunities and have the right teaching tools.

Defining the new generation of basketball tranining

By Mike Eddy

The game has changed, taking with it the skills needed to succeed. While players who can pass, dribble and shoot will be successful, they can raise their game to a new level if they can master the "New Fundamentals." If you're surprised or skeptical that the way the game is being taught has changed after 100-plus years of existence, take a close look at the foreign players playing in the NBA or on the collegiate level.

The coach as a teacher

coach as a teacher

To be a successful coach, you must teach your players individually, and then as a team

By Michael J. Pallerino

Kevin Cantwell believes that teachers are born. Ask the 25-year-plus coach and recruiter about the finer points of coaching basketball and that's what he'll tell you. Cantwell firmly believes that coaching is not so much about the Xs and Os as it is about teaching your players. And if you want Cantwell to be brutally honest, because he will, he'll emphatically say that today's coaches – in any sport and on any level – must be teachers.
