5-Man Weave Drill

Doin’ the Weave

Getting the best shot on the floor means knowing where everybodyis suppose to be at all times. The 5-man Weave drill can help.

There is nothing quite like the sight of a well-oiled basketball machine – all cylinders clicking, players moving in sequence, sneakers squeaking on the floor (which spells perpetual movement) and getting off that perfect shot.

That’s what the game is all about. That’s what every coach strives for. That’s what you have to work on, day in and day out.

The 5-man Weave drill is designed to work on important aspects of your ball handling, body control and team skills. Participating in the drill will help you learn how to operate within a certain space while adjusting to your teammates movements.

For starters, you are going to need five players to set the drill in motion. Each player must line up wide along the baseline. The ball should be in the hands of the middle player, who will pass it to either side, follow the pass and then run behind the farthest player, on that side, and up the court.

The player with the ball should now make a pass to the third player and immediately follow the pass and run behind the farthest player up the court.

Continue the weaving motion the entire length of the floor and finish with a shot.

Make sure that each player follows his pass and runs behind the teammate who received that pass. Also, make sure the ball never touches the floor. Have the players run in front of, not behind, the teammate who received the pass. OC
