On Court Player Development® is a systemic approach to fixing the problems that are challenging grassroots basketball by restoring the original intention of sports participation – character building, life lessons and the fundamentals of the game in communities across the country.

On Court Player Development® is a cohesive plan that creates a united front for every major stakeholder in grassroots basketball. The program includes the development of a centralized coach certification program; establishment of “Americanized” basketball academies nationwide; technology and online communication vehicles that will build communities and share information with parents, athletes and coaches.

On Court Player Development® programs are designed or approved by a highly respected advisory team, which includes Herb Brown, assistant coach, Charlotte Bobcats; Teresa Edwards, four-time Olympic Gold Medalist and women's basketball legend; Dan Bonner, CBS NCAA basketball analyst, Mark Price, former NBA All-Star; Bob Rathbun, Atlanta Hawks and Fox Sports Net broadcaster; LaVon Mercer, former Maccabi Tel Aviv legend; Duane Ferrell, former NBA player; noted performance and fitness trainer Jackie Ansley; Joe Forte, NBA referee; Jan van Breda Kolff, former NBA player and NCAA coach and Kevin Cantwell, former associate head basketball coach at Georgia Tech.

On Court Player Development® Virtual Trainer

What is it?

The On Court Player Development® Virtual Trainer is a unique, online approach to improving your skills for the game of basketball. The Virtual Trainer [1] allows you to have your own personal workout guide that you can access whenever and wherever you want. Upon registering, you will be asked to choose a level (beginner, intermediate or advanced). These levels refer to a combination of the experience the player has with the On Court Player Development® philosophy, experience with the game of basketball, and the skill level the player possesses. The three levels are as follows:

Beginner: An athlete who is new to the On Court Player Development® drills and philosophy. Someone who has very little experience in the game of basketball and wants to learn the basics of how to play the game the right way.

Intermediate: An athlete who has mastered the beginner-level drills and is ready to move on to more advanced drills.

Advanced: An athlete who fully understands the On Court Player Development® philosophy and is ready to perform the highest level, most difficult drills in the program. These are the same drills performed by Louis Williams and Thaddeus Young of the Philadelphia 76ers and Tanner Smith & Terrence Oglesby of the Clemson Tigers as well as other professional and collegiate players.

There is a different workout each day that can be sent through email or by logging into the website.

Every drill listed in our Workout of the Day [2] is available on video, with an easy-to-understand identification system that lets you easily find any drill that you're looking for. You may also download and view written instructions for each workout. For this and more visit our Virtual Trainer page [3].

There are seven drill categories in our Workout of the Day [4]:

Legs Footwork: Drills that focus on improving coordination of the lower body. These drills also focus on balance and economy of motion. We use many of these drills as great warm-up drills for the workout.

Pivoting Footwork: These drills really focus on strengthening the toes and feet, as well as the rest of the lower body. The pivot is a lost art in today's game and players need to learn how to effectively pivot in order to become a better overall player.

Ball-Handling/Dribbling Footwork: These drills are geared towards ball-handling and dribbling but the main emphasis is still on footwork and the On Court difference makers.

Passing Footwork: These drills are designed to help choreograph the body in order to become a more efficient passer. The skill of passing is more than just upper body coordination. Players need to have lower body coordination to be an effective passer.

Shooting Footwork: This category contains more drills than any other category. Every player's favorite thing to do is shoot, so we offer many drills that are geared towards shooting that still focus on balance, control, change of direction and economy of motion.

Defensive Footwork: We don't get too deep into specific defensive philosophies. We leave that up to the particular coach. But what we do offer is several drills that help players improve their defensive footwork. These drills are designed to strengthen the toes, feet, and groin to make the player a better defender.

Rebounding Footwork: Our Rebounding Footwork drills focus mainly on pivoting and the importance of pivoting when it comes to rebounding the basketball.

Each drill offers repetitions or an allotted time limit. For Legs Footwork, Pivoting Footwork, Ball-handling & Dribbling footwork, one repetition is equivalent to going one full-court length. If a full court is not available, one repetition will equal the length to half court and back.

For Shooting Footwork drills and shot series, one repetition equals one shot or one time through the series. Note: Drill series might have six different shots – so one repetition is equal to six shots.

Workout questions

  • What if I don’t have a partner or other person to workout with?
    • While the team drills are specifically designed to be used with multiple players, the other drills can be done individually. If you have access to a Toss Back machine, you can use that as a passer. If you don’t have access to that, simply toss the ball out with a little bit of backspin in order to simulate a pass.
    • Some drills are individually-based but need another player or two. If you don’t have another player, using chairs and cones can simulate certain situations. For example, if you are going through the Mark Price Pick and Roll series and don’t have enough players for offense and defense, simply use a chair to simulate the pick, and you can complete the specific drills prescribed in the workout.
