Evaluating Speed, Agility & Quickness
How to prevent dribble penetration. How your staff can evaluate speed, strength and agility. Renowned performance trainer offers advice.
By Jackie Ansley
Q: My team continues to get beat on penetration to the basket? What can I do to help prevent this? Sometimes they seem to know where the ball is going but can't get there in time.
Jackie: There is no "one" magical workout, but by addressing the fundamentals such as footwork, stance (loading the hips), body position (balance), first step explosion (lateral and linear) and vertical explosion players, a player will become more aware and reactive on the court. Once you work on some of the fundamentals and drills, you can design some conditioning programs.
Q: What are some drills that my coaching staff and I can use to quantitatively evaluate speed, strength and agility as they relate particularly to basketball?
Jackie: What makes an athlete’s speed and quickness progress is the utilization of proper training and instruction of body position. Speed, agility and quickness involve movements in all planes – linear, lateral, and vertical – thereby improving the over-all athlete. Basketball specific drills that test efficient change of direction in confined areas is one way to measure their agility skills. We like to implement team-specific programs that focus on improving individual and unified weaknesses in strength, conditioning, and speed and agility. If you can understand more for your team, then I think the drills for your potential recruits would be understood. Sometimes the simple drills you see are the hardest because of body control and balance. OC
